South Dakota Educational Content Standards
Ninth Through Twelfth Grades
The following list was selected from the South Dakota Content
Standards for the Ninth through the Twelfth Grades. These specific
standards can be met through the
tours offered at the National Music Museum (not every standard is
met in every tour offered). This information can be used to assist
teachers in selecting appropriate tours and to enable teachers to request
specific standards they would like to see met during a visit to the
Museum. It can also be used to justify the field trip and the cost of
transportation.
The student will:
-
apply various context clues to determine word meaning.
- connect and synthesize main ideas and concepts to determine
relationships with other sources
or topics.
- extend comprehension by combining new information with prior
knowledge.
- evaluate new information in relationship to past
experience/knowledge.
- analyze the effect personal knowledge has on the interpretation of
text.
- ascertain the difference between fact, reasoned judgement, and
opinion in various texts.
- write business correspondence acceptable for workplace and academics.
- synthesize information from multiple sources and analyze the unique
perspective of each
medium.
- evaluate the effect of different verbal cues on the impact of a
message.
- use interpersonal etiquette and maintain an open mind when listening
and viewing.
- ask appropriate, focused, and subject-related questions to interpret
the intent of the
communication.
- summarize, restate, or paraphrase what has been presented for
clarification and understanding.
- interpret instructions and directions presented in a variety of forms
and situations.
- determine how the clarity and organization of communication can affect
the meaning of a
message.
- analyze the effect of eye contact, facial expression, gestures, and
posture used in oral
communication.
- paraphrase the speaker's purpose and point-of-view for clarification
and comprehension.
- ask relevant questions concerning content and meaning of information
for increased
comprehension and retention.
- recognize and use logical patterns of organization for effective
recall.
- clarify and defend positions with precise and relevant evidence.
- use vocabulary and terminology appropriate for the audience.
- use appropriate grammar, sentence structure, and syntax in various
speaking situations.
- determine how the environment for an audience can affect
communication.
- summarize causes and effects of the Industrial Revolution with
emphasis on new inventions
and industrial production methods; economic changes to capitalism
and free enterprise; and
impact of industrialization, urbanization, and immigration on
American society.
- know the physical and human characteristics of places by applying the
concept of regions to
organize the study of a geographic issue using multiple criteria,
and analyzing changes in
regions and recognizing the patterns of those changes.
- know how culture and experience influence people's perceptions of
places and regions by
analyzing why places and regions are important to human identity,
comparing and contrasting
how and why different groups in society view places and regions
differently, and analyzing the ways places and regions reflect
cultural change.
- know how to apply geography to understand the past by analyzing how
differing perceptions
of places, people, and resources have affected events and conditions
in the past; and analyze the fundamental role the
places and environments have played in history.
- explain how observation and evidence are essential for reaching a
conclusion.
- apply basic scientific processing skills (observing, classifying,
measuring, communicating,
predicting, inferring).
- analyze the impact of scientific investigations and findings on human
society.
- predict and evaluate how the characteristics of materials influence
product design.
- create, implement, and defend a plan for gathering data to answer
relevant questions.
