The following list was selected from the South Dakota Content Standards for Second Grade. These specific standards can be met through the tours offered at the National Music Museum (not every standard is met in every tour offered). This information can be used to assist teachers in selecting appropriate tours and to enable teachers to request specific standards they would like to see met during a visit to the Museum. It can also be used to justify the field trip and the cost of transportation.

The student will:

1. identify rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration in poetry and prose.
2. describe cause and effect relationships in various text.
3. use correct grammar in a variety of sentence structures.
4. use the writing process to generate various forms of writing.
5. write to accomplish different purposes.
6. summarize main points presented with courtesy and respect when responding to others.
7. observe and note the gestures and facial expressions used by the speaker.
8. compare related information from different sources.
9. describe related information from different sources.
10. describe the components of appealing audio or visual presentations.
11. ask different types of questions for different purposes.
12. paraphrase information shared by others.
13. restate information heard in a logical and understandable sequence.
14. report on various topics using appropriate facts and details.
15. use correct grammar in oral communication.
16. make simple introductions and greetings using appropriate language.
17. use an expanded speaking vocabulary.
18. use oral language appropriate for the audience.
19. interact appropriately in formal and informal speaking situations with peers and adults.
20. study various community structures and the roles of men, women, and children within the community with emphasis on Pilgrims; pioneers; Native Americans; and reservation, rural, suburban, and urban communities of the present.
21. use the globe to label the equator and continents.
22. explain the interdependence of producers and consumers in a market economy by describing factors that have influenced consumer demands; and ways that producers have used natural resources, human resources, and capital resources to produce goods and services in the past and present.
23. investigate scientific contributions made by people everywhere in the world.
24. use investigations in science to answer different questions.
25. make predictions based on observations rather than random guesses.
26. recognize that some changes in matter can be reversed and some cannot.
27. predict the effects of force on objects.
28. explain how technology is applied to daily life.
29. analyze the impact and interactions of human activities on the environment.
30. investigate and describe ways science is used to solve problems.
31. use informal methods to solve everyday problems requiring open sentences with one unknown.
32. identify and describe solid figures according to faces, edges, bases, and corners.
33. identify geometric figures regardless of position and orientation in space.
34. order events by time sequence: past, future, and equivalent periods of time.
35. identify ordinal positions using ordered sets of objects.
36. estimate sums and/or differences of two whole numbers and find the answers using the appropriate methods of computing.
37. determine common attributes in a given group and identify those objects that do not belong.
38. use data to explain relationships.
39. explain relationships present in a given set of data.
40. list all possible outcomes of probability experiments.
