Access to the Musical
Instruments
The National Music Museum encourages access to its collections, staff
expertise, and resources by visiting scholars, qualified students,
performers, instrument builders, and other interested individuals.
This includes access to objects in exhibits and in the study-storage
areas. In order to allow the most efficient use of the Museum's
collections for research purposes, the following guidelines have been
established:
Individuals who want to visit the permanent exhibits are invited to do
so, whenever the Museum is open. The Museum is open daily, except
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
Individuals who want to look at instrument files or to study
instruments that are not on display may do so on weekdays, but must make
an appointment in advance. Please state your credentials and
purpose in writing and await confirmation, before coming to the Museum.
Appointments must be made at least two weeks before the
visit. This allows time for staff scheduling and instruments to be
moved, if necessary.
Instruments on exhibit may not be moved, nor cases opened, during
regular hours. Individuals wishing to examine such instruments must
make an advance appointment so that the instruments can be removed from
the exhibit and be made available for study. Instruments on exhibit
will be removed only for compelling reasons.
Only a small number of people can be accommodated at one time in the
study-storage areas. Please do not bring unexpected guests.
Children are not allowed in the study-storage areas or conservation
laboratory.
A member of the staff must be present at all times, when visitors are
in the study-storage areas. Instruments may not be handled, except
under
the supervision of the Director or a member of the staff.
Researchers should provide their own measuring instruments (non-metal).
Instruments for which measurements are already available in the files will
not be measured again, unless there are compelling reasons to do so.
No instrument may be played or disassembled except with permission of the
Director, Curator, or Conservator. Because of climatic and security
reasons, instruments may not be removed from designated areas. Due
to staff limitations, the time a visitor may spend in the storage areas
may be limited.
Graduate students who wish to utilize the Museum's resources for
substantial research must register for an appropriate number of hours (a
minimum of two semester hours) or for MUS 795, Project Seminar
(independent
studies), during the semester (or summer session) in which the student
will be at the Museum, even though the student may be on campus for only a
portion of that semester.
Scholars who wish to utilize the Museum's resources for substantial
research projects funded by grant funds, whether those funds are provided
by their own institution, a private foundation, or a governmental unit
such as the National Endowment for the Arts, or whatever, must make
provision in their grant proposal for reimbursing the Museum for its
contribution of staff time, use of equipment, and so on.
Anyone utilizing the Museum's collections for the accumulation of
research information, including the taking of photographs of the
instruments, may be asked to sign an agreement specifying and delineating
the purposes for which said information and/or photographs may be used.
Utilization of the Museum's resources for educational purposes is
strongly encouraged; however, utilization of the Museum's resources for
commercial purposes and/or for personal gain, without specific written
permission from the Director of the Museum, is forbidden.
Copies of all research information, data, and measurements accumulated
during a research visit must be left with the Museum at the
conclusion of the visit.
Within limits imposed by safety and security regulations, staff size and
availability, the Museum will accommodate as many requests as possible.
Infractions of regulations will result in the revocation of research
privileges. The regulations are subject to change only at the
discretion of the Director.
