Sixteenth-century Italian Cittern

NNM 3386. Cittern
attributed to Urbino,
Italy, ca. 1550. The body, long neck, and pegbox terminating in
an
openwork scroll are carved from a single piece of wood. Two other
citterns with the open scroll survive in London and Vienna, but do not
have the elaborate body. Ex. coll.: Lord Astor. Witten-Rawlins
Collection, 1984.
