Play Hard and Have Fun

With an assortment of options from three-on-three basketball to esports, USD Intramurals is sure to have the sport for you. You can take part in an ultra-competitive league or try your skills out in a more relaxed, recreational league.

We offer approximately 35 events per calendar year, and almost all are free for USD students!
USD staff, faculty and their spouses are permitted to participate, as well, for a nominal fee.

How Do I Sign Up?

The official IMleagues app is your source for everything USD Intramurals. Check game schedules and results, communicate with teammates and receive real-time campus recreation updates on your phone.

Activities are typically set up with four teams per division within competitive, recreational, or open leagues. Each division will be scheduled at a specific day and time for the regular season games.

Intramural Rules and Information

Sportsmanship is a a main focus of USD Intramurals. After each game, officials and the site supervisor will collaborate together to determine the sportsmanship rating for each team based upon a 0-4 scale (0 being the worst). Please refer to Handbooks and Manuals.

Any participant whose physical condition or health status is such that playing in an intramural contest might be detrimental to him/her is ineligible to participate, unless written permission has been obtained from certified medical personnel. The Wellness Center staff and the University of South Dakota are not responsible for any injuries, health problems or otherwise that might occur to any person playing intramural sports.
  1. All players must meet the eligibility rules.
  2. Only protests concerning player eligibility and misinterpretation of the rules will be considered by Intramural staff. Officials' judgment may not be protested.
  3. If the protest does not involve eligibility, it must be made upon the field/court of play and duly noted by the intramural official/supervisor. The protesting team must make sure that the exact score, half, time remaining, possession of the ball and other particulars of the play are noted by the officials and supervisor in charge before resuming play. Both teams and officials must be told that the game is being played under protest. If the protest cannot be resolved during the point of interruption, the contest will be replayed starting from the point of protest, if the protest is sustained (except eligibility protests).
  4. All protests must be followed up in writing and submitted to the Wellness Center the day following the contest in question.

After investigating a protest, the Assistant Director of Activities or Graduate Assistant of Activities will make a final decision.

Prior to registering or joining a team for any league sport, team captains must pass an online rules quiz assigned to that sport via the IMLeagues portal. This must happen during the pre-season; the quiz is the last step in the sign-up process for these sports.
A playoff meeting will take place shortly after the regular season ends. During this meeting, teams will choose their own spot in a playoff bracket. The order of choice is indicated by each team’s playoff seed, which is determined by the following categories: winning percentage, sportsmanship rating, head-to-head record and overall point differential.

Default

A team captain or representative is responsible for notifying the Intramural office if their team is unable to participate in their scheduled game by 2 p.m. on game day, or 2 p.m. Friday for Sunday games. A default will result in a loss for the defaulting team and a sportsmanship rating of "3.0" for the game.

Forfeit

Late or no notification of a team’s inability to participate in a scheduled game will result in a team forfeit. One forfeit eliminates each player of the forfeited team from all further intramural play. It is possible for a team who has forfeited only one time to continue play by paying a $20 fee to the Wellness Center (inside the main office) within 24 hours and/or before the team’s next scheduled game.

Event Types

Team Events

Grab some friends, sign up a team and make big things happen! Every team interested in registering for an event must appoint a team captain. This captain is in charge of registering the team online, attending the playoff meeting and communicating the schedule to the other team members.

One-Day & Individual Events

Any eligible participant who wishes to participate in an individual event can register online via IMLeagues.com. While advanced registration is strongly encouraged for most events, individuals can show up and join on the day of the competition.

Tournaments

Tournaments are a combination of team events, individual events and one-day events. Depending on the number of teams, tournaments can typically last anywhere from one to three days. Schedules may vary, so keep a close eye on your schedule!

Free Agents

Any student, faculty or staff member who would like to participate in a team event, but does not have a team, is welcome to register as a free agent. If you would like to do this, please refer to Sign-Up Instructions.

Success story Sam Young smiling.
I have many fond memories of my time at USD, but my time spent rooming with my close friends in McFadden sophomore year was a blast. Spending time playing in intramural sport leagues (volleyball, flag football, floor hockey, etc.) was also a ton of fun as I always enjoyed playing sports.  Lastly, deciding to join the fraternity Beta Theta Pi was another decision that directly led to many of my best memories at USD including volunteering, making new friends, meeting my wife, and broadening my perspectives and experiences.
