The University of South Dakota's Music Directors Institute is an intensive program designed to expose music teachers to the best in current and standard literature in addition to teaching methods and materials.  The three-day institute will include large ensemble reading sessions, master classes and clinic sessions that focus on a wide variety of teaching subjects for band directors.

Courses:

MUS 790: Instrumental Literature Reading Sessions for the Music Classroom (1 cr.)
Interactive reading sessions which present a survey of Band classics, Christmas favorites, new releases from major publishers, and pieces from the resource, “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band”, GIA Publications.


MUS 790: Instrumental Techniques and Procedures for the Music Classroom (1 cr.)
Master classes on techniques, teaching materials, and pedagogy for band, grades 5-11, to aid the band director (hereafter referred to as student) with instructional resources for teaching band.


MUS 790: Trends and Best Practices in the Band Classroom
Seminars and panel discussions with veteran master teachers and international band composer, Brian Balmages. Topics will include how the composer and his music can affect and relate to individual musicians, large ensembles, and conductor/teachers. There will be discussion on and trends in instrumental music education, and how composers have or may affect these trends.

Choral Directors Institute

The University of South Dakota's Music Directors Institute is an intensive program designed to expose music teachers to the best in current and standard literature in addition to teaching methods and materials.  The three-day institute will include large ensemble reading sessions, master classes and clinic sessions that focus on a wide variety of teaching subjects for choral directors.  Housing will be available for participants wishing to stay on campus.

MUS 793: Advanced Rehearsal Procedures for the Music Educator (1 cr.)
This is a series of lectures on various choral topics, i.e. conducting, rehearsal skills, vocal skills, classroom management, etc.


MUS 793: Choral Literature Reading Sessions for the Music Classroom (1 cr.)

Reading sessions focusing on a wide variety of choral music for public school choirs, grades K–12. Materials will include both standard works and new releases from major publishers.


MUS 793: Trends and Philosophies of Choral Music in the Classroom (1 cr.)

A seminar for the discussion of current trends and methods in choral music.
