As the number of machines on the internet continues to grow, a new top-level domain was assigned to countries. Each country has its own two letter domain name. ( au = Australia, jp = Japan, se = Sweden, uk = United Kingdom,
us = United States, etc.) Because many domain names already existed with the old domain name scheme (without 2-letter country identifiers ), many local domain names do not have these country identifiers. You will find both types of addresses here in t
he U.S.
NOTE: If you are sending a message to someone with the same right-hand
address (sunburst.usd.edu) as yours, you can get by with just typing the
username.
