I P Folder Index N

To display the contents of a folder you need to get the folder index. There are several folders that you have (or will have). By default, your machine will probably be set to display your InBox or where you receive your mail. If you are going through the tutorial, you should see your message in the window below soon.

Your mail comes to you through the INBOX folder.
E-mail you send out is stored in the sent-mail folder.
Items that you want to keep should be stored in the saved-messages folder.

Go ahead and type I from the main menu to view your folder index. Currently, this should list the files in your in-box. If you sent the message to yourself in the previous section, it should show up in a window similar to the one below.

From this screen you can tell that you have a total of 4 messages.

+
means that the message was sent directly to you. The message was not sent to you as a carbon copy, and it is not from a generated list of e-mail addresses.
A
means that you have sent a reply regarding the message to the sender.
N
means that you have a new unread message.
D
means that you have marked the message to be deleted (when you quit Pine). Pine will ask you if you really want to delete the message, "expunge message," before it takes you back to the UNIX prompt.
*
means the message is important. You have "flagged" or marked the message to get your attention at a later time (flagged options -- New, Deleted, Answered, or Important).

To READ any of the messages, you need to highlight (or select with up arrow or P-previous and down arrow or N-next message) the message to read and type the V for ViewMsg. (You can also hit Return as it is the default for this screen.)

Your messages will stay in your INBOX until you delete them or save them to another folder.

Go ahead and view the message that you sent to yourself.

Replying to a message

If you read a message and wish to reply to the original sender, you can type R while reading the message. Pine will ask you if you want to include the original message in your reply. If you do include the original message, the first character of each line will be a > (greater-than sign). Including the original message wastes unnecessary band width, or in simpler terms takes time and space away from other activities on the Internet. Unless the original message brings clarity to the reply, don't include them.

Also, if the original message was sent to more than one person, you will be asked if you wish to send to all of the original recipients. It is a good idea to check the addresses in the To: and the Cc: fields before you send any message.

When you REPLY, you will be put into the composer part of Pine with the senders address in the To: field. All of the commands are the same. Notice the subject is the same as the original with the RE: in-front of the original Subject: line.

You should have a message in your in-box with the subject of welcome to e-mail. I would like for you to reply R to that message. This message was not sent to you alone. Make sure you DO NOT send your reply to other recipients. READ your screen.

Forwarding a Message

Forwarding a message will open a copy of your current message with the cursor on the To: field. You can also add a short message to the original message. The original message will be below the ---- message text---- followed by the --- forwarded message- --. Again, forwarding a message puts you into the composer part of Pine. The commands are exactly the same as before.
