I P Help Menu N

Status Line
The top line of any Pine window tells you which part of Pine you are currently using.
Commands -or- On-line Help
The bottom two lines of any Pine screen list the commands available where you are. The main menu and help menu are almost always available. These help commands are context sensitive, which basically means each screen in Pine has its own set of commands.
OTHER COMMANDS
The most common commands for each Pine screen are displayed on the bottom two lines of the window. When there are more commands for a particular screen, they are available by choosing O for OTHER COMMANDS.
CONTROL KEYS
Many times you will see the "^" key next to a letter. This refers to the control key, and you type the control key in conjunction with the other letter. Some computers will actually intercept certain control characters before they get to Pine; if this happens, the following is a work around that should work. For instance, if Control-X doesn't work try typing "ESC ESC X" (ESC is the escape key.)
PAGING UP/DOWN
The + and - keys will page forward (next page) or back (previous page) respectively. Here are some additional ways to go forward: space bar or Ctrl-V. You can also page back with Ctrl-Y.
RETURN KEY
The return key is usually set to default, the most frequently used command for each screen. If there is no default for a particular screen, the return key simply won't do anything.
Just a Note: If you happen to get hooked up through a bad phone line and your screen happens to get goofy, you can redraw the screen using the Ctrl-L command.

There is a built-in manual for Pine that you can refer to from the main menu by pressing the ? key. Once there you should see the TABLE OF CONTENTS as listed below:

  1. Introduction
  2. Pine Help
  3. Local Support Contacts
  4. Giving Commands in Pine
  5. Status Line
  6. Main Menu Commands
  7. Command Line Options
  8. Pine Configuration
  9. Reading News
  10. Reporting Problems

I should probably mention that if you have a problem, contact someone at your site before you try to report a problem to the authors of this program. There is a feature built into Pine for reporting bugs, but don't! Look at any relevant help screens, ask someone for help, duplicate the problem, ask someone else, ask support staff for your account, and if there is a problem - - - let the support staff report any bugs. There are often local configuration problems that can be corrected.
