Eraser Tool (E)

The Eraser Tool eraser tool is used to . . . (you guessed it) ... erase. To use the eraser simply click on the eraser tool on the toolbar and then - click on an area of the canvas and hold the mouse button down and drag the eraser around on the canvas to erase the area. The picture below was taken of the eraser in action. You should be aware of the fact that the background color (white when I was erasing here) is the color that appears underneath your picture.

Eraser Types

There are several features that can change the way that the eraser works. I've thrown together a few examples to show the different brush effects while erasing. The graphic below shows the pencil, paintbrush, airbrush and block. Look carefully at the right edge of the Airbrush. I did not release the mouse button immediately so there is some over spray at the end - so be careful when you are using the airbrush to release the mouse appropriately). Also notice how the pencil and block have sharp edges while the paintbrush and airbrush have a softer edge. This is due to the blending of the colors along the edge of the brush. Background color was white in this example also.

Opacity and Fade

You also have the options of working with the Opacity of each of these brushes or eraser types. I've included several different variations below with Opacity setting of 10%, 30%, 57%, and 100% - all of these were with the paintbrush setting of the eraser. The Fade option allows you to start at 100% and fade in a defined number of steps to the foreground color. Background color used was blue seen in the 100%.

Wet Edges

Another option with the eraser (available only in the paintbrush mode) is "wet edges" - which is basically a watered down color with the background color along the edges. Notice how the overlapping "wet" brush changes color while the "non-wet" brush erases directly to the background color. Background color used was same blue as seen on the right X.
