Text Tool - (T)

The Text Tool is used to place text onto a picture. Later versions of Photoshop create a new layer for the text to go onto - so you can maintain the edit ability of the words. The text layer can remain an independent text layer or can be rendered into an independent graphics layer.

There are many different ways that the letters can be changed.

Sometimes it is good to just put the letters onto the picture without manipulating them too much. In the above example, the exact phrase in black letters is offset behind the words in white letters. This gives the letters more of a contrast against the sky.

Other times we might want to apply some of the Effects available under the Layer menu. A couple of different variations of the effects are shown to the right. Both of the words (Adobe and Photoshop) started off with a solid color. By adjusting the angle, blending, and effect, you can see some definite differences.

Effects that are standard in Photoshop including: Inner and Outer Glow, Inner and Drop Shadow, Bevel and Emboss. There are many different third party add-ons to Photoshop that add different text effects.
