BROER EXHIBITION TO BE AT USD JUNE 12-JULY
2VERMILLION - The exhibit, "Roger Broer: An Artist in Context," will be hosted by the University of South Dakota University Art Galleries June 12 through July 2.
Featuring American Indian themes and subjects by Roger Broer, the exhibit consists of 40 works including paintings, prints, drawings and mixed media work. It will be displayed in the Main Gallery of the USD College of Fine Arts.
Broer of Kent, Wash., earned a bachelor of arts, extended fine arts degree from Eastern Montana College and has earned credits toward a master of fine arts degree from Central Washington University (Ellensburg).
During his 20-year career, he has traveled across the country, exhibiting in 30 one-man shows and 50 group shows. Broer has received over 25 awards in national shows including the Trail of Tears Show and the Red Cloud Show. He has earned a national reputation for his diverse and inventive appraisal of contemporary art.
Broer has presented workshops and has served as a guest artist at the Great Falls Native American Art Show in Great Falls, Mont., and as a juror in Seattle, Wash., and Poulsbro, Wash.
"I perceive my major strength as a 'no holds barred' approach to painting," said Broer in his artist's statement. "How a painting is accomplished is of little value, when in retrospect, one observes the sense of spiritualism in the finished product," he said.
The show was organized by University Art Galleries at USD and The Heritage Center, Inc. at the Holy Rosary Mission at Pine Ridge, S.D. This exhibition will be on tour for 2 years with support of the South Dakota Arts Council.
