TWO HAWK TO DELIVER 8TH ANNUAL JOSEPH CASH LECTURE AT USD OCT. 24
VERMILLION, S.D. -- Dr. Webster Two Hawk will present the 8th Annual Joseph Harper Cash Lecture on October 24 at 8 p.m. in Old Main’s Farber Hall on The University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion. His presentation, "History from Small Places: Sicangu Lakotas in Transition—The Last 100 Years," will address land issues and tensions among federal, state, and tribal governments. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception follows.
About Webster Two Hawk
Dr. Webster Two Hawk, Sr., was born
in rural White River, South Dakota, and is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
He attended the Rosebud Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Boarding School at
Rosebud, South Dakota, and is a graduate of Todd County High School at Mission,
South Dakota. He was graduated from The University of South Dakota in 1952 with
a B.S. degree in Business Administration and received his Master of Divinity
degree from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio.
His military experiences include
service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and as a Chaplain Major
(Retired) with the South Dakota National Guard. Dr. Two Hawk served as an Episcopal
Priest on the Yankton Reservation during 1957-62 and on the Standing Rock
Reservation from 1962-68. From 1968 to the present, he continues to serve as a
volunteer priest.
A political activist, his
experiences include development of the State Indian Task Force, appearances
before the U.S. Congress on Indian issues, and creation of the National Tribal
Chairman's Association and the United Sioux Tribes Development Corporation.
Dr. Two Hawk is the recipient of
numerous honors and awards including Honorary Chief of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe,
1973 Alumnus of the Year awarded by the USD School of Business, President of
the United Sioux Tribes Development Corporation and the National Tribal
Chairman's Association. He holds honorary doctorate degrees in Humane Letters
from Kenyon College and in Divinity from Huron College. He was accorded an
Honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1998 from The University of South Dakota.
During 1969-73 and again from
1983-85, Dr. Two Hawk was elected for three terms as Chairman of the Rosebud
Sioux Tribe. In the interim, he served as Director of the Institute of Indian
Studies at USD from 1974-76. After
leaving USD, he served as Director of St. Elizabeth's Mission Home, Wakpala,
South Dakota, and as Associate Director of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Community
Action Program. Since 1996, he has served as Commissioner of the South Dakota
Tribal Government Relations Office in Pierre.
