Availability: University of South Dakota Only and Inside the Wegner Library Description: BIOSIS Previews contains a vast collection of records from thousands of life science literature sources across the globe. Subjects covered include the medical sciences, biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry, food science, and plant sciences to name a few. This is an excellent place to look for unique resources in addition to those found in MEDLINE/PubMed. It includes references to journal articles, books, patents, and materials from conferences (meeting abstracts and posters). The library has access to BIOSIS Previews from 1991 to 2007.

CINAHL Vendor: EBSCO Availability: All Wegner Partners Description: Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature is the pre-eminent indexing and retrieval system for nursing literature and for literature in the allied health professions. CINAHL's indexing is uniquely nurse-friendly and therapist-friendly, providing standardized terms that make it easier to retrieve focused lists of articles on specific care practices used in the allied health professions. Medline (see Pubmed) Full-Text: Yes Vendor: National Library of Medicine Description: PubMed provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

MEDLINE (via EBSCO) Vendor: EBSCO Availability: All Wegner Partners Description: This is the same MEDLINE database (see description under PubMed) as offered through the National Library of Medicine but with an EBSCO Web searching interface. MEDLINE contains citations from medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, the health care system, health administration, and the pre-clinical sciences back to 1865. Advantages of searching EBSCO MEDLINE: Under the “Choose Databases” tab within EBSCO MEDLINE, more than one database can be searched at a time such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, etc. Also, it is possible to search words next to each other with “adjacency” searching which is unavailable within PubMed MEDLINE. Disadvantages of searching EBSCO MEDLINE: There is a time lag for citations to be added to EBSCO MEDLINE. Citations are added to PubMed MEDLINE first.

PubMed Vendor: U.S. National Library of Medicine Availability: All Wegner Partners and the Public Description: PubMed is the most current Web-based search interface for searching the MEDLINE database. MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine’s premier bibliographic database that contains over 16 million references to journal articles in the life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. This free database contains citations from 1950 to the present. Approximately 5,000 journals published in the U.S. and more than 80 other countries have been selected and are indexed in MEDLINE. MEDLINE uses a controlled vocabulary, or key words, called MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) to provide better searching. You can save search results, save search strategies, email results of a search, highlight in color search terms, and have a search topic run automatically based on personal time preferences through a PubMed function called MyNCBI.
