Government

Re-instate a democratic government

Restore Constitution

Elect new Parliament

Give power back to President

Regain confidence of international community

Give up Kashmir region

Cut back military spending

Opt for peace with India

As a democratic form of government is more conducive to capitalism and privatization of industry, Musharraf should be encouraged to reinstate the current president along with the constitution and the parliament of Pakistan. These changes will encourage economic growth.  The international community, along with the World Bank would once again be able to recognize Pakistan as a secure place for investment.

Also, the government of Pakistan needs to reevaluate its military spending and its general approach to the contested region of Kashmir. Currently, military spending is 3.9% of GDP; money that could be better spent on economic stimuli and social programs that reduce the population growth rate.  Two and a half percent of GDP spending is a much more reasonable number considering the larger problem of population growth and the lack of foreign investment. This drop in spending needs to correspond with a resolution to the Kashmir conflict. With no solution in sight after years of war, Pakistan should relinquish its claim on the disputed land and focus on more pressing issues. It is understood that this choice is neither easy, nor popular, but for the greater good of Pakistan, the choice must be made.
