Why is Pakistan a Population Problem, both in local and world terms?  In order to understand the effects that Pakistan's population has on the country itself, and on the world, we must examine the basic demographic statistics of Pakistan.  So, here they are!

 

Total Population:  141,553,775 (July 2000 est.)

Population Growth Rate:  2.2%

Birth Rate:  34.38 births per 1,000 people

Death Rate:  10.69 deaths per 1,000 people

Sex Ratio:

At Birth:  1.05 males per female

Under 15:  1.06 males per female

15-64:  1.05 males per female

65 and over:  .99 males per female

Infant Mortality Rate:  93.48 deaths per 1,000 births

Total Fertility Rate:  4.91 Children born per woman
