Group 1

They had priests and priestesses, but they had no place to worship.

They had shrines.

They showed the women's power over nature, animals, and the underground.

That the women have control over the snakes.

In the bigger picture, they represent power.

Because it's related to the uterus. The horns symbolized the uterus.

It is a small feasibility because they had no medical knowledge.

It is protection of the throne and the goddess.

Group 2

By looking at our past, we can learn from the mistakes and grow and determine how we aggressed.

We do study the other cultures and their roles in society, but we don't study our own culture's roles because we are real life experiences.

Without studying the past, there wouldn't be many jobs to offer such as archeology and history teachers. Also, without the study of roles in the past, we would not have anything to live up to as a culture.

If we would not study our past, we would digress.

Leisure time: There would be more time for leisure if we didn't have as many jobs, but a lot of our leisure time is spent in museums, etc.

Group 3

Most of the assumptions are not sufficiently backed up by physical evidence.

The findings are analyzed by someone who is looking for something in particular. Each archaeologist sees the findings with their own slant.

These theories are based on factual findings such as artifacts, but any assumption as to culture is not factual.

They took into account where the snakes were found, i.e. the throne. There were many examples of snakes and women found on seals and other artifacts (statues, paintings, etc.)

We should discuss our own ideas using the old theories as a basis and build by forming your own ideas.

Group 5

Some women were priestesses and the rest were equal with the men--this points towards a "strangely feminine society." Jobs: priestesses. bore children, tended fields, picked flowers (lillies), honored goddesses, prepared sacrifices, leaped bulls. Status: seemed to hae a higher standing than men (i.e. priestess or goddess).

The priestesses are are found in different places and positions and had different hairstyles than the "normal women." The priestesses also were involved in different activities than "normal women."

There was no equal status. There were many more priestesses in pictures than priests, thus showing a leaning toward women. Plus, the Mother Goddess would lean toward women as a higher power and status.

RE: faience goddesses: Onl y four (two pairs) of figures. Holding snakes symbolizes power. Rebirth and fertility from breasts and snakes. (These faience goddesses are involved in a) ceremony that doesn't happen often, which could be a ceremony of a sacred marriage. Or a harvesting ceremony: the plants are underground, the snake leads to the underground.
