A survey of American literature from the late nineteenth century to the present, this course acquaints students with major literary movements, genres and writers of the period and with various cultures that have shaped America's literature. Literary works will be considered within their historical and social contexts. Text: Paul Lauter, et al., ed. The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Concise Edition. Requirements: Attendance, completion of regular reading and writing assignments, written response to the performance of a pertinent text or a reading by a visiting writer, mid-semester exam, 1,000-word essay, final examination.
