Fall Schedule Busy for Svatý …

Svatý officers and members will be kept busy over the next two months with parades, demonstrations, student fairs, two local SCA events, and community volunteer work.

During the first week of September, Svatý members will march in the Labor Day Parade in Newcastle NE and will hold a demo on campus east of the CSC on Thursday before the first official meeting of the academic year. The following week, members will participate in the Student Activity Fair on the USD Campus on Wednesday. That weekend, the largest SCA event in the immediate area, Armorgeddon, will be held at nearby Union Grove State Park. Approximately 600 SCA re-enactors are expected to attend this four day event, which features armored combat tourneys and battles, royal courts, arts & sciences demonstrations and classes, and a host of merchants.

The last weekend in September, The College of Svatý Sebesta will be holding its fall session of the Collegium at Wayside Dairy just two miles east of Vermillion. This weekend camping event will feature workshops and classes covering a wide range of the arts & sciences of the Middle Ages. These classes are open to the public and there is no admission charge or camping fee.

On October 5th, Svatý Sebesta members will be hauling their infamous siege weapon, a trebuchet nicknamed the Wrath of Gourd, to Newton Hills Sate Park near Canton SD. Each year we compete with the Park Rangers to see whose trebuchet can fling the most pumpkins into an (empty) outhouse.

For Dakota Days, members will march in the parade on Saturday, and will continue to participate and do volunteer work for the Vermillion Area Arts Council’s Annual Chili Blues feed and contest.

For more information on any of these activities, contact any officer or visit our web site at http://www.usd.edu/socrean.

Summer & Misty Win Division at Poorman’s Pennsic
Summer Brady and her mount Misty won the Intermediate Rider’s Division during Equestrian activities sponsored by Falcon’s Keepe at Poorman’s Pennsic X in Pittsville, WI on Aug. 3rd, 2002. Summer and her husband, Andrew, also competed in equestrian activities at Autumn Rose in Galesville WI (Shire of Rokecliff) on August 31. Summer advanced her rider authorization to advanced status, and Andrew authorized as a beginner rider. Summer hopes to start working toward her marshal warrant soon and add equestrian activities to local Svatý events. Anyone interested in participating in SCA equestrian competition is encouraged to contact her at 624-3972. Summer will also be presenting an intro to SCA Equestrian class at Crash’n’Bash VII.
Lilies War Camp A Fun Vacation for All …

Twenty five current and former Svatý members gathered in Smithville Lake, MO the second week in June for ten days of battles, classes, dance circles and shopping at Lilies War—an annual Kingdom of Calontir event. In addition to a core group from Vermillion, former members from the Minneapolis, Chicago and Seattle areas flew into KC International to join the encampment.

Except for one evening of storms, weather was good for the entire event—meaning we set up in dry weather and packed up in dry weather. The comfort of the encampment was enhanced this year with the addition of another 10x20 walled shelter and a 20x30 dining and shade tent. The addition of an oven to the kitchen also meant we were able to enjoy fresh baked breads at several evening meals, and biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

Our last evening at Lilies became a special one as His Stellar Highness Kitakaze Tatsu Raito and his consort joined us for evening feast. Also at head table were Baron Giles and Lady Jandalara—two delightful and talented persons familiar with our encampments in the past.

A special thanks is also in order to Lady Lynette fitz Osbourne of Trewint. Though not a Svatý member, Lady Lynette continues to play an important role in the success of our encampment. No better example exists of the maxim we go to the war to meet the people and be with friends, not just to see the battles.

Exchequer’s Report …

The College of Svaty Sebesta maintains financial records as a non-profit educational organization under Sec 401 (c) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. As such, the College only attempts to generate enough income from its events to allow it to sponsor following events. As exchequer I am pleased to report we made a $268.07 profit at our last feast—leaving us in good shape for Crash’n’Bash VII.

Also, as approved in a general vote of the membership, a check for $100 has been sent to the Principality in response to its fundraising efforts to pay for the Populace Pavilion. In exchange for the donation, the Svatý device will be painted on one of the pavilion's panels.

Gross Income Qtr2 2002 $468.86 from Brewers’ & Vinters’
Expenses $180.79 for food and
$20.00 for miscellaneous items
$100.00 Principality Pavilion Fund
Current Cash on Hand $358.13

Cearr & Nualla Wed in Lonely Tower

Tara Nelson and Jesse Neese were married August 10, 2002 in Omaha. The event was the culmination of a romance begun at Lilies War several years ago when Tara was Chatelaine for Svatý Sebesta and used the SCA name of Brianna Fallon. An SCA ceremony and reception is planned for the couple at Amorgeddon. The first week of their honeymoon is being spent at Pennsic War.

Known World Handbooks Available for $13 ….

Copies of SCA’s Known World Handbook are available from Svatý Sebesta for $13.00. The reduced price is possible because the group purchases a bulk order of the publication for sale to members. If you would like a copy, please let The seneschal or Exchequer know. Checks should be made out to SCA, Inc.—College of Svatý Sebesta.

Svatý to Maintain Event Roster …

Svatý Sebesta will continue to sponsor its traditional four annual events, and may add a fifth geared toward equestrian, archery and horse archery.

An indoor archery event called Sebastian's Strings leads our annual calendar in mid-January. The event features competition and informal target archery for adults and youth and includes a lunch and pot luck feast.

Hertzkrieg will follow as a tournament style fighting event featuring armored combat and rapier competition. It will be held in February as close to Valentine’s Day as possible at the Washington Street Arts Center.

Brewers’ & Vintners’ is scheduled for mid-April and will serve as the Spring Session of the Collegium. This event features dozens of instructional classes and workshops, guest speakers, an informal Arts & Sciences competition, and a formal feast. It is also held at the Washington Street Arts Center.

Crash’n’Bash completes our annual event schedule in late September. This is a camping event featuring Arts & Sciences workshops and demonstrations, with a strong emphasis placed on gathering to socialize rather than compete. It is the Fall Session of the Collegium and is held on private land east of Vermillion.

While not formal events, Svatý members can also count on a formal group camp at Lilies War next June, and in traveling to Newton Hills State Park next October to toss pumpkins at outhouses with the trebuchet.

As the Fall Session of the Collegium of Svatý Sebesta this event will feature workshops, demonstrations and classes honoring the Arts & Sciences of the Middle Ages.

This is a primitive camping site with a beautiful view of the Missouri River Basin separating Northshield from Calontir. It is also within walking distance from the pottery shed, the woodworking shop, the forge and metalworking shop, the dairy barn and the livestock corrals.

While the Spring Session of the Collegium featured short one hour classes, the Fall session will concentrate on workshops requiring longer time periods of up to three hours. There will also be a selection of one-hour classes throughout the day.

Classes will include: make an inkle or table loom; candle lantern construction; spinning and weaving; pottery; tablet weaving; introduction to coal forge techniques; metal casting; archery; intro to SCA equestrian activities; and period handgonnes of the Middle Ages.

While there will be no tournaments or battles, there will be workshops on battle related topics, such as armoring, weapons and tactics.

The site is discreetly wet. Though on private property owned by an SCA member, all mundane and SCA laws will be strictly enforced.
