Fighting at Svatý Sebesta:

local members compete in heavy weapons, light
weapons, archery, and equestrian competitions.
Practices in all disciplines are held on a
regular schedule with locations and times
listed in the Calendar of Events.

Heavy Weapons combat is a recreation of
Medieval tournament combat. Participates must wear
appropriate protection (armor) and be "authorized"
by a marshal in the use of arms and the rules of
combat. Competition is usually one on one, but
battles are held at area, regional and national
events where tens, hundreds, and even thousands of
heavy weapons fighters take the field. Practices
are held on Monday evenings.

  Light Weapons competition recreates
the fencing style of the Middle Ages, often called
"swashbuckling." Schlauger blades are used and
participants must wear adequate protection and be
authorized in the use of weapons and the rules of
combat. Practices are held on Sunday evenings.

Archery competition is a popular activity
in SCA and is based on the use of straight and
recurve bows and wood shafted arrows. Unlike the
other martial actvities, there are no membership
or age requirements to participate in archery. Most
competitions consist of shooting at a standard
target set at 20, 30 and 40 yards. In Svaty, However,
we also do a number of specialty shoots including
wood walks, night shoots, distance shoots and fun
shoots. Practices are held on Friday evenings.

Equestrian competition is rapidly becoming a
standard activity at area SCA events and is done
entirely on horseback. Competition games include
dressage, rings, pig sticking, quintaine and horse
archery. Riders must be paid members and must pass
an authorization to compete. Practices are generally
held on Sunday afternoons.

Boffers are weapons made of foam and other light
materials designed to be used against unarmored opponents.
Boffer competitions are sometimes held at meetings as well
as events. No special training or padding is required to
compete, though the events are normally "marshaled."
Boffer competition is a good way to learn and practice
some of the techniques associated with heavy and light
weapons fighting and allows all ages to participate in
SCA fighting without authorization.
