It's a Good Tip!

 St. Cyriakus Church

Be sure to make time for a guided tour of the town, in the company, perhaps, of Frau Fromm or one of her colleagues. Her eyes light up when she speaks of Duderstadt's history - of its first mention in the year 929 and of its gradual development into a medieval metropolis when the salt trade formed the backbone of its economy. But she can also tell you of more recent events, of the Congress of Vienna and its consequences, of the Eichsfeld's separation by the internal German border and the days of reunification. And she also has droll stories to tell about Duderstadt and the Eichsfeld - about the partial and full right to brew beer, the Duderstadt militia and the time when tobacco was grown here.

No noise - and lots of greenery. A relaxing experience. The town and its neat little villages enjoy a high quality of life. Even the air is good. Parks, green open spaces and a reduction in traffic ensure a healthy atmosphere in the town. Duderstadt is a charming place. Tangible reminders of history - something which appeals to children, too. The medieval townscape, the historic old Town Hall, the churches and the town wall. History is a living entity here - as it should be.

The sun is shining. The cafes in the Marktstraße have set out their chairs in the open air. People meet and sit together. Coffee and cream cakes are ordered. Hospitality is a feature of Duderstadt. And whether it be in an elegant, stylish restaurant or a traditional inn, you'll find it to your liking. It's something you can't really appreciate until you've experienced it. In the Marktstraße is the rippling Brehme brook with children playing in the cool water. That way, shopping's fun!
