Band Directors Institute

The University of South Dakota's Music Directors Institute is an intensive program designed to expose music teachers to the best in current and standard literature in addition to teaching methods and materials.  The three-day institute will include large ensemble reading sessions, master classes and clinic sessions that focus on a wide variety of teaching subjects for band directors.

Band Directors Institute

Courses:
MUS 793: Band Repertoire for the Public School (1 cr.)
Band reading sessions will focus on a variety of band classics, as well as many new releases from major publishers. Ses­sions will include material from the resource, Teaching Music through Performance in Band, GIA Publications.

MUS 793: Instrumental Methods for the Music Educator (1 cr.)
Clinic sessions will include rehearsal techniques and instrumental pedagogy.  Methods and materials will be available to take back to the classroom.

MUS 793: Artistic Conducting/Band Tone and Balance with James Barnes (1 cr.)*

Led by master composer and conductor James Barnes, these clinic sessions will focus artistic conducting and achieving proper band tone and balance.

Choral Directors Institute

The University of South Dakota's Music Directors Institute is an intensive program designed to expose music teachers to the best in current and standard literature in addition to teaching methods and materials.  The three-day institute will include large ensemble reading sessions, master classes and clinic sessions that focus on a wide variety of teaching subjects for choral directors.  Housing will be available for participants wishing to stay on campus.

Choral Directors Institute

Courses:
MUS 790: Choral Methods for the Music Educator (1 cr.)
This is a series of lectures on various choral topics, i.e. conducting, rehearsal skills, vocal skills, classroom management, etc.

MUS 790: Choral Repertoire for the Public School (1 cr.)
Reading sessions focusing on a wide variety of choral music for public school choirs, grades K-12.  Materials will include both standard works and new releases from major publishers.

MUS 790: Current Concepts in Choral Music (1 cr.)*
A seminar for the discussion of current trends and methods in choral music.
*A written final project is required.
