USD School of Law bestows prestigious Jackson Award to Roger Baron for excellence in teaching

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Professor Roger Baron is the 2008 recipient of The University of South Dakota School of Law John Wesley Jackson Outstanding Faculty Award. Baron was selected by a committee consisting of School of Law Dean Barry Vickrey, Justin Johns, president of the Student Bar Association, and Professor Charles Thatcher, last year’s recipient. This is the second time Baron has been honored at USD with the Jackson Award. He also received the award in 1995. Baron will receive a plaque and a cash award and his name will be inscribed on a plaque retained permanently in the Law School.

"Roger is a great classroom teacher, a nationally recognized legal scholar, and a devoted member of the Law School community and the legal profession of South Dakota," Vickrey said. "He is a most worthy recipient of the Jackson Award."

Established in 1981 through a gift by Horace and Dorothy Jackson of Rapid City, S.D., the Jackson Award recipient is chosen from nominations by students and faculty at the School of Law. Selection is based on criteria demonstrating excellence in the teaching of law, including effectiveness in the classroom; efforts to improve legal education in ways that serve the needs of the profession and of South Dakota; research and writing; contributions to the profession through public service; and contributions to the academic environment of the Law School.

Baron joined the faculty at USD School of Law in 1990 and teaches courses in civil procedure, family law, and insurance. He continues to be active in the development of the law concerning issues of subrogation and reimbursement in connection with personal injury insurance claims and has frequently been consulted on issues related to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). His publications include the annually-updated “Cases and Materials on Family Law for the South Dakota Lawyer.” In 1991, he began serving as the State Reporter for South Dakota for the American Bar Association’s project, “Family Law in the Fifty States,” published annually in the Family Law Quarterly. Baron’s numerous law review articles on the topics of insurance, civil procedure, and family law have been frequently cited and quoted in legal briefs and court opinions across the United States. He also continues to operate USDLAW, an electronic list service which allows the free flow of communication on matters of interest to South Dakota lawyers, judges and students of the law. USDLAW has been in operation for more than 10 years and currently has more than 400 subscribers.

Baron received B.S. and J.D. degrees from the University of Missouri – Columbia. He is a member of the bar associations of South Dakota, Missouri and Texas. A photo of Baron is available for download at
