VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota is pleased to announce that James L. Parker, Ed.D, is the next dean of students. Parker, who will begin his duties at USD on June 1, most recently served as director of student activities at Texas Christian University.
"I'm looking forward to working with the students, faculty and staff at The University of South Dakota," said Parker, who received his master's degree in education from the University of Oklahoma and his doctorate in education from Texas Christian University. "I'm excited to help USD in its mission to provide students with an extraordinary educational opportunity."
As director of student activities at TCU, Parker worked with a population of about 8,000 students. He managed the offices of student activities, fraternity/sorority life and served as student affairs risk manager. In addition to managing a budget of $2.4 million to create continuous programming for a newly-constructed $100 million campus commons, Parker directly managed a staff of 13 on the University Programming Committee and supervised a hall director staff of five.
"We are pleased to have James joining us and we are excited about the future," said Jeff Baylor, associate vice president for enrollment and student services. "We were impressed with his experience in student affairs and education, and know they will serve him well in this position."
Prior to working at TCU, Parker spent six years as the assistant dean of campus life at TCU. From 1998 to 2002, Parker was associate director of the Center for Student Life and coordinator of the University Achievement Class at the University of Oklahoma. He directed a diverse team of more than 20 administrative staff supporting student life, multicultural affairs, women’s outreach and Greek affairs.
