USD to host 2009 DWP Holocaust Institute in July

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota will host the 2009 Dakota Writing Project Holocaust Institute, July 26-31, guiding participants on a central theme that focuses on the resilience of the Jewish and Native American communities.

Middle school and high school teachers are invited to participate in this institute that will explore traumatic issues, including the Holocaust and Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, which impacted the Jewish and Native American communities. The institute is intended to help teachers and their students appreciate the importance of tolerance, acceptance and respect of all cultures.

In addition to keynote speakers such as Jan Hausmann of Mount Marty College, Sue Morrell, who teaches English courses at Wagner Community School, and Jason Murray, a Native American graduate student and teaching assistant at USD, the Holocaust Institute includes readings and other relevant materials on the Jewish Holocaust and Native American genocides; classroom strategies and writing assignments that support students’ understanding of tolerance and respect for others; and attendance at a follow-up meeting Nov. 7 in order for participants to share their ongoing process of integrating these topics into their classroom teaching.
