VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota’s internationally-acclaimed Rawlins Piano Trio presents “The Composer Speaks…Music as a Political Statement” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 at Colton Recital Hall in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. The event is open to the public free of charge.
This performance includes three works by composers who were inspired by modern world events, including Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s E minor trio, “Op. 67,” Emma Lou Diemer’s “Piano Trio, No. 2,” which was written for the Rawlins Piano Trio and “Money Eyes” by Ruby Fulton, also written for the Rawlins Piano Trio.
Diemer has taught on the faculties of the University of Maryland and the University of California, Santa Barbara. She continues to be an active keyboard performer (piano, organ, harpsichord and synthesizer) and composer. Fulton, who grew up in Northwest Iowa, plays violin, viola and accordion in the Baltimore bands Spoke Ensemble and Ike Shark, Incorporated. Along with composer George Lam, she is co-director of Rhymes With Opera, a company dedicated to bringing new opera to unconventional spaces.
All three artists of the Trio – pianist Susan Keith Gray, violinist Eunho Kim and cellist Marie-Elaine Gagnon – are USD Department of Music faculty members. Since its founding in 1987, the Rawlins Piano Trio, named for its benefactors, the late Marjorie and Robert Rawlins, has distinguished itself as a dynamic group of performers, teachers and scholars. The ensemble performs regularly throughout the United States and abroad, including recent concert and teaching tours throughout Taiwan and Panama. Owing to its expertise as a preeminent interpreter of American music, the ensemble has recorded four CDs on the Albany Records label. The Trio continues its commissioning program with three premieres during the 2010-2011 season.
