Established in 1973 on the campus of The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the National Music Museum has gained international acclaim as a preeminent institution dedicated to musical heritage. Its distinguished collections encompass a staggering assemblage of over 15,000 instruments, including a diverse array of American, European and non-Western origins, representing a wide spectrum of cultures and historical periods.
The National Music Museum was founded as a partnership between The University of South Dakota, which provides staff and facilities for preservation, teaching and research, and is recognized as "A Landmark of American Music" by the National Music Council.
