The PDP is one of the campus rotations that seniors in the Department of Dental Hygiene participate in. Through this rotation, students bring portable dental equipment into rural schools and a few nursing homes in South Dakota, providing some free and/or low-cost preventive dental services to underserved individuals in these locations.

Community service grants like this one are intended for projects that provide access to care in underserved communities, improve the public’s oral health and provide oral health education.

This is the third grant dental hygiene has received from the Mars Wrigley Foundation. Wendel and other dental hygiene faculty have written and received various grants over the past 12 years to help supplement for this program, with the total grant funding being almost $2 million.
