Students Understanding Sustainable Tactics (SUST) Club

We create and increase social, economic and environmental sustainability. We work with USD and the wider Vermillion community to create projects and hold outreach opportunities to educate the public about what it means to live sustainably.

Every spring we host Earth Days along with the local organization Greening Vermillion and local businesses and farms.

We are always looking for new ideas from students of all majors. You do not have to be in the sustainability program to participate, but sustainability majors and minors are encouraged to join.

Campus Green Initiative Fund

USD's Student Government Association (SGA) offers funds for projects related to sustainability.

Abstract Submission Deadlines

Stage 1: All applicants must submit a brief project abstract to the committee before applying for a grant. The application committee will review abstracts and reply within two weeks of the committee review date. Applicants who submit abstracts by the early deadline will receive committee decisions with feedback and the chance to resubmit, if requested by the committee.
Early submission deadline: October 15, 5 p.m. CST
Final submission deadline: October 31, 5 p.m. CST

Stage 2: The committee will invite a limited number of projects to present their grant abstracts the week of November 13. Grant winners will be announced by the end of November.

Abstract Requirements

Project abstracts must:

  • Be submitted in PDF or Word document form with at least 12-point font and one-inch margins
  • Include the project leader's name, phone number and email in the document header
  • Include the title of the project
  • Include a summary of the project that contains:
    • The overall purpose and goals of the project
    • A brief description of how the project will be implemented
    • Sustainability benefits to campus
    • How sustainability benefits will be measured
    • Approximate start and completion dates
    • Any additional information you want the committee to know (optional)
  • Include a budget (see table below)
  • Not exceed two pages in length

Budgets should be submitted in the following format:

For early abstracts, save the document as "EA_ProjectName_YourLastName" and as "FA_ProjectName_YourLastName" for final abstracts. Email the completed abstract to sga@coyotes.usd.edu with the name of the project in the subject line.
