Welcome to The University of South Dakota Department of Biology.

Biologists walk on the wild side - studying everything from plant physiology to animal ecology. Biology provides you with a science "stepping stone" to numerous career paths in a wide range of fields.  You'll find bio grads at work in medicine and healthcare, research, conservation and ecology, education and government.

The U's Department of Biology has the largest undergraduate enrollment of biology students in the state and offers courses that provide a broad background in biology, as well as concentrations in particular areas.  The teaching and research interests of the faculty are diverse, ranging form physiology and cell biology to ecology and environmental stress physiology, neuroendocrinology, and population and evolutionary ecology.

The Department is located in the Churchill-Haines building. Individual faculty members have research labs with specialized equipment supporting their research programs. Departmental facilities have been and continue to be upgraded by major external awards (NIH, NSF, and HHMI).  Additionally, the department maintains several research collaborations with The School of Medicine and frequently has access to additional instrumentation (SEM, confocal microscope, etc.). The Missouri River Institute on campus provides a focal point for research and scholarly activity, education, and outreach pertaining to all aspects of the Missouri River Basin.

Biology is a department within the College of Arts and Sciences.
