Music Scholarship Form  2009-2010 (pdf)

A degree in music from The University of South Dakota provides students with a solid foundation to enter the teaching profession, gain confidence as a performer, or to seek an advanced degree in Music Education, Performance, or Music History.

The Department of Music offers several undergraduate and graduate professional degrees that offer a combined emphasis on scholarship and creative development.  Undergraduate students can choose between three majors: music education, performance, or musical arts. Music education majors can emphasize the vocal or instrumental area.  Many students take coursework in both areas to prepare them for K-12 teaching. Performance majors excel in careers as studio teachers, music sales representatives, and performers.

We thought you'd like to know:

  • In 1887 the Department of Music was one of the first formal departments created by the founders of USD.

  • The Department of Music has been accredited since 1953 by the National Association of Schools of Music.

  • Excellent music faculty are internationally active through research projects and performances, and they bring the most current information back to the classroom.

  • Music professors teach the majority of music classes within the department;  graduate teaching assistants teach non-music major private lessons.

  • The Department of Music awards over $140,000 in music scholarships each year.  Music scholarship awards range from $400 to $4000 per student.  Scholarships are renewable annually pending funding and student achievement following scholarship guidelines.

  • The Department of Music was named "Department of the Year" by the Student Government Association in 2004 and in 2008.

  • USD's Music Educator's National Conference Chapter #343 received the South Dakota Board of Regents Academic Excellence Award in 2005.

  • USD started a Pi Kappa Lambda national honor society for music in 1999. To date we have inducted thirty-six members.

  • The Department of Music is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

  • The Department of Music offers college students the opportunity to learn how to teach music to youth while under the guidance of their college professors.

  • Our music ensembles tour the region to visit public schools and various community centers for performances. Various ensembles are scheduling tours to Europe.  The Chamber Singers and Brass Choir toured Germany, Denmark, and Norway in May of 2005.

  • As part of its commitment to technology, the Department of Music offers several courses designed to utilize the most current software applications.

  • USD's Music Educator's National Conference Chapter #343 received a national Collegiate Membership Chapter Growth Award in 2005.
