"I can't think of anything more important to the average citizen than the idea of justice."

[
Socrates in Plato's Republic]

The University of South Dakota Criminal Justice grads are shaping policy and improving lives, from the forensic officers on the street to Chief of Police offices, from probation/parole to corrections officers and from juvenile treatment counselors to courtroom prosecutors. Their understanding of justice issues helps us define and manage the relationships of the individual to the state and to the criminal justice system.

You'll find USD Criminal Justice graduates at work anywhere issues of justice and law enforcement arise - in law firms, in federal agencies such as the U.S. Marshals, FBI and IRS; in child welfare, private investigation and national defense; in local and regional law enforcement agencies such as police, state patrol, border patrol, sheriffs' departments, and others; in counseling, community service and education.

The department offers a BA and BS in Criminal Justice, a double major with Sociology or Political Science and a double major with any other option. For graduate students, the Master of Public Administration degree offers an emphasis in Criminal Justice.

Criminal Justice is a program within the College of Arts and Sciences, the University's oldest academic unit. The College of Arts and Sciences provides the foundation for all of the University's undergraduate students and offers outstanding preparation for graduate and professional programs.
