The annual “We are United” Diversity Symposium is held each spring semester consisting of speakers and workshops on diversity and inclusiveness. This is a student-led and organized event that accomplishes several goals.
First, the event brings together Spectrum, the Gender and Sexuality Alliance; Tisopaye, the Native American Student Council; Latino Students Association, Union of African American Students, Asian American Students, Association for the Advancement of Women’s Rights; and other student groups for a day of educational and cultural awareness. Some of the topics addressed in the past include intergroup relations, Native American history, sexism, transgendered people, diversity on campus, and stereotyping.
Second, the Symposium promotes positive intergroup relations on campus. The symposium, which is held March of each year, is a gift from the Native American community of USD to promote unity at the university. The first annual symposium was organized by Tiospaye.
The next “We are United” Diversity Symposium is Thursday March 26, 2015. To get involved or learn more about the event, please call the Office for Diversity at 605-677-3925.
