Given the events of these months, it seems important to discuss the state of the art in disaster psychology as it relates to terrorist acts. Please join us for this important world gathering of mental health professionals dealing with or preparing to deal with terrorist acts and those affected by them. The keynote speakers who have been confirmed for this year's Innovations in Disaster Psychology conference include:
Annette La Greca, Ph.D.
Dr. La Greca is a Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics, Director, Clinical-Child and Pediatric Health Programs, and Co-Director of the Child Division in the Department of Psychology, University of Miami. She is co-editor of the new book Helping Children Cope with Disasters and Terrorism (2002, American Psychological Association). She was one of the leading scientists to study the impact of Hurricane Andrew on children, and later chaired the steering committee for the Working Group on Children and Disasters. She is the principal investigator for Keeping Children Safe:A Program to Help Children Cope with Community Violence, and Helping Children Cope with Disaster.
Colonel Larry James, Ph.D.
Col. James is Chief of the Department of Psychology at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington DC. He is also the Chief Psychologist for the Northeast Medical Command, which ranges from Ft Bragg, North Carolina to Ft Drum, New York. In that capacity he oversaw the Army's mental health response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, as well as responses across much of the eastern seaboard.

This conference is designed to provide an opportunity to learn, share, and network in a professional, but comfortable atmosphere. Most meals and breaks are included in the price of registration as are the outings. The conference is deliberately kept relatively small to enhance the opportunities for informal sharing. And it all takes place in the beauty of South Dakota's Black Hills!
In addition to the keynote speakers, there will also be four half-day paper sessions, one on each of these four themes: Military and Federal Government Perspective, Children and Families, Non-Governmental Organization Perspective, Local/State Government or Community Perspective. Papers can be theoretical, research-based, or applied. You are invited to submit a paper for consideration for presentation at the conference. Links to the pdf or Word versions of the call for papers are below. Deadline for proposals has been extended to August 14, 2002.
