Disaster Mental Health Institute
Summer Intensive Program, 2004
NEW! The Graduate Certificate can now be obtained through continuing education rather than graduate credit. This results in a 50% price cut for out-of-state mental health professionals. Take a look at the revised Fees table. In addition, graduate students from any state in any of the designated fields of mental health listed below may now earn the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Mental Health.
The Summer Intensive Program is intended to make it easier for mental health professionals and graduate students from other universities to complete the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Mental Health. Each year the Summer Intensive Program will offer the three required courses for the Graduate Certificate (Disaster Mental Health, Serving the Diverse Community in Disaster, and Crisis Intervention) and one or two of the courses which can be used as the fourth elective course. In 2004 the two elective courses scheduled to be offered are Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Management in Disaster Mental Health.
This year classes will meet "in person" June 8 to July 1, 2004, and will also require a combination of assigned readings, internet-based distance learning, and papers May 10 to July 30, 2004.
Courses are scheduled so that the certificate can also be completed in two consecutive years, spending only 10 days on the USD campus each year. Those choosing this option would take Disaster Mental Health and Serving the Diverse Community in Disaster the first year, then complete Crisis Intervention and an elective course, as well as the capstone exercise the second year. (Please note that at this time some of the links to course syllabi below are for 2003.)
In Summer 2004, all Summer Intensive Program classes will meet on the USD Vermillion campus in the South Dakota Union building. Disaster Mental Health (PSYC656) will meet afternoons June 8-12 and 14-17.
Serving the Diverse Community (PSYC658) will meet in the mornings June 9-12 and 14-18.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PSYC657), and Management in Disaster Mental Health (PSYC755) will meet in the mornings June 21-26 and June 28-30.
Crisis Intervention (PSYC655) will meet in the afternoons June 21-26 and June 28-30.
The Graduate Certificate capstone exercise will take place the morning of july 1.

All graduate students enrolled in mental health programs who wish to receive the Graduate Certificate in Disaster Mental Health are required to complete all requirements for their degrees in addition to the requirements for the proposed certificate.
Peformance Requirement: A grade of "C" or lower in any course required for the graduate certificate is unacceptable and necessitates the student repeating the course if she/he wish to complete the certificate.
Capstone Exercise: Students in the Graduate Certificate program are required to complete a tabletop disaster response scenario for the DMHI faculty and national figures in the field. This provides a capstone measure of the success of the graduate certificate program. The goal for this assessment is that all students will be evaluated by the national team members as superior to entry level disaster mental health personnel.

Registration
All participants in the SIP need to notify the DMHI of your intent to attend the classes as soon as possible, but by May 8 at the latest. Participants in the Summer Intensive Program who are not already students at The University of South Dakota and wish to receive graduate credit for the SIP are required to complete an application to become a "Special Student" in the graduate school. The special student applicant is not required to furnish transcripts or recommedations and there is no minimum grade point requirement. A student in this classification must complete a Special Student - Post-Graduate Status application. Actual registration for the courses can take place during the first week of the on-campus classes.
Lodging
A limited number of rooms are being held for SIP participants at reduced rates at the brand new Holiday Inn Express in Vermillion. These rooms will be available on a first-come basis. University housing may also be available. Contact the DMHI for further information.
