Welcome to The University of South Dakota Division of Curriculum and Instruction

curriculum & instruction

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral-level degree programs in three program areas: elementary education, secondary education, and special education.

The School of Education theme of Reflective Decision Making and Leadership requires that students demonstrate active involvement in their learning. Students reflect and synthesize information to problem solve through case studies, simulations, and a variety of field experiences.  They utilize theory and research through their professional practice and experience.  The curriculum focuses on professional and content standards, diversity training, technology integration, partnerships with schools and other agencies, and creation of optimal learning environments.

The Curriculum and Instruction Division is a professional faculty who are committed to involving students in exploration of teaching and learning processes. They combine the most effective research on teaching, enhanced through the use of appropriate technology, with actual experiences. Faculty members are aware that they are training teachers to function as educational leaders and that teaching provides the knowledge base for all other professions. They believe that teaching is a very honorable profession.

I am proud of our division and the commitment each faculty member has to the individuals enrolled in our undergraduate and graduate programs. I welcome you to the division and hope you will consider joining us to further your education.

Dr. Garreth Zalud
Chairman of Curriculum and Instruction
