The School of Education has established a range of scholarship opportunities to recognize excellent high school achievement by first-year students and outstanding academic performance by upperclass students already in attendance at the university.

Jeanne Spilde Gonzenbach Scholarship

Scholarships are given to outstanding third- and fourth-year students who are enrolled in or accepted by the USD School of Education. The recipients will hold majors in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following requirements:

  • Are elementary, secondary or special education majors
  • Have financial need as the number one priority
  • Have commitment and passion for a career in education
  • Have campus and community involvement
  • Desire to teach in South Dakota upon graduation from USD

Preference is given to a South Dakota student. Each recipient will receive this scholarship for their third and fourth year at USD. Recipients are determined by a committee comprised of the School of Education dean, one faculty member, one university official, one academic/recruiting department member and two other designees. The committee will review applications and hold interviews during the fall semester for the award to be made in the subsequent academic year. An equal scholarship amount is given to each recipient.

Robert and Elizabeth Wood Elementary Education and Special Education Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding third- and fourth-year School of Education students who are enrolled in elementary education and/or special education at USD and meet all requirements to be a student in good standing. The recipient(s) will hold majors in Elementary Education and/or Special Education. The scholarship will be awarded to only two students, who will receive this scholarship for their third and fourth year at USD, as long as they meet the criteria listed. Three faculty members of the Division of Curriculum and Instruction will select the recipients.

Ben and Lillie Otto Scholarship

Scholarships are available to students pursuing an undergraduate secondary school teaching degree in the Curriculum and Instruction Division of the USD School of Education. The recipient must have at least a 2.6 cumulative GPA. Preference is given to a South Dakota Native American student. Financial need is a major factor in selecting the recipient.

The recipient is chosen by a committee of at least three Curriculum and Instruction faculty members, appointed annually by the chair of the division. Each candidate will submit a paper, handwritten in ink and signed, addressing why he or she desires to become a teacher. The selection committee strongly considers the paper and the applicant's ability to express him or herself in this medium in making its final decision.

Wayne H. Evans Sr. and Patricia Evans Teacher Education Scholarship

These scholarships are given to Native American junior or senior undergraduate students or for Native American graduate students who are enrolled in the USD School of Education. The scholarship is awarded to students who are planning to become teachers.

Constance L. Hoag Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a major in elementary education or special education. The recipient must:

  • Demonstrate qualities of exemplary professionalism, competence and dedication to excellence
  • Have a positive attitude, honesty, integrity and dedication to their future as an elementary teacher

Hazel Linderman Scholarship

Students majoring in elementary education at the USD School of Education are eligible for this award. Preference is given to students entering their junior year who are judged by the selection committee to have strong potential for service in their field. Financial need may be considered, but is not the sole determining factor.

This scholarship is available to junior elementary education majors who are interested in preserving the legacy of the one-room rural school.

Sidney E. Anderson Scholarship

Graduate students in the division of Technology for Education and Training in the School of Education are eligible for this scholarship. Recipients must be fully admitted in either the master's or educational specialist degree program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must be preparing themselves as technology leaders in school or business. An application is required and must include two references and resume.

Jim and Jean Beddow Family Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship must be third or fourth-year students aspiring to teach in a rural community in South Dakota.

John and Helen Buehler Scholarship

This scholarship is given to undergraduate students who have completed their freshman year and are planning to seek admission to a USD teacher education program for elementary, secondary or special education certification. The recipient must be a graduate of a South Dakota high school and must provide a brief statement of intent explaining their reasons for becoming a teacher. The scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of three years.

Tony Cacek Outstanding Social Studies Student Scholarship

Senior students who are social studies education majors. Recipients are chosen based on student teaching experience, above-average GPA and contributions to the field of social studies.

Pauline Champeny Estate Scholarship

Scholarships are given to students preparing for a career in teaching.

Superintendent William J. "Bill" Cody Scholarship

These scholarships are given to School of Education students.

E. Louise Coover Memorial Scholarship

This annual scholarship is awarded to students who have earned a degree but have returned to the university and are registered in the master's plus certification program to obtain their teaching certificate.

Cragg Family Scholarshi

This scholarship is awarded to a School of Education student who demonstrates financial need and has a grade point average in the top third of their class. Preference is given to members of Alpha Phi, women and elementary education majors. Consideration is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

Roger H. Davies Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the School of Education with an interest in teaching science and an interest in music, with a preference to vocal. The recipient will receive the award in their junior or senior year in the USD School of Education with at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to students who come from a rural area of north central or northeastern South Dakota.

Mark W. Delzell Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship must be an education student with good character and at least a 2.5 GPA.

Russell and Jane Dokken Scholarship

First consideration for this scholarship is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

Heartland Consumer Power District/Dan and Dot O'Connor Scholarship

Students enrolled in the USD School of Education as sophomores, juniors or seniors are eligible for this scholarship. First consideration is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

Deborah Hout Johnson Scholarship

Preference for this annual Coyote Commitment scholarship is given to a School of Education student.

Jack and Ila Hunt Family Scholarship

This scholarship is available every other year to a graduate of a Sioux Falls, South Dakota public high school. The recipient must be a college junior or senior and majoring in education. The recipient should have financial need and participate in school and community affairs, with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.

Debra and Gary McKellips Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a student enrolled in or accepted by the USD School of Education. Half of this award may be used to fulfill a Coyote Commitment and half may be stackable.

J. Nielsen Scholarship

Preference for this annual Coyote Commitment scholarship is given to a School of Education student.

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship

This scholarship is given to graduate or undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the School of Education.

Daisy (Dee) Delores Wheeler Rini Scholarship

These scholarships are for students in the School of Education. The award is made in the name of Daisy (Dee) Delores Wheeler Rini with preference to a woman in education. Student thank yous should be sent to:

This scholarship is awarded to a student from South Dakota majoring in education. First consideration is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

Undergraduate students who are enrolled in or accepted by the USD School of Education are eligible for this scholarship.  First consideration is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

South Dakota Education Association Leadership Scholarship

Students who are active in the SDEA student organization at USD are eligible for this scholarship.

Maureen Senner Pickering and Leland Steele Scholarship

Annual scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in USD's School of Education undergraduate program.

Raleigh R. Steinbach Memorial Scholarship

These annual scholarships are awarded to students in the School of Education who are entering their senior year. Preference is given to students who plan to teach at the secondary level.

Wilbur and Doris Townsend Scholarship

This scholarship is available to incoming freshmen who intend to enter the field of education through the USD School of Education.

Marie (Reetz) Turney, Samuel Reetz Turney and Dello Halsted Turney Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship must be U.S. citizens and will be selected on the basis of academic merit and promise for future accomplishments. Recipients who remain qualified may be awarded the scholarship annually for up to four consecutive years.

Otto Ullrich Scholarship

Students enrolled at USD and who have been accepted into the School of Education are eligible for this scholarship. Recipients must be graduates of Yankton High School. First preference is given to students majoring in math or science, second preference for students majoring in foreign languages or special education and third preference for students in any other field of study critical to a secondary school curriculum.

Horace and Donna Walter Scholarship

Four scholarships are given each year to School of Education students, with preference given to entering freshmen who are graduates of a South Dakota high school and who major in education. Scholarships may be renewed providing the student maintains eligibility. Students are selected based on their qualifications for the Bush Foundation program, including the Coyote Commitment scholarship program.

Mary Wanserski Memorial Scholarship

Annual scholarships are available to non-traditional undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the School of Education at USD. Preference is given to a female Head Start parent.
