The Sound of USD

Open to all students, be a part of the pageantry and the fun.

As part of The Sound of USD, you'll bring spirit and energy to Coyote football games to help the team deliver the win. The Sound performs at all home football games and at least one away game annually. You'll also perform as the exhibition band at contests and festivals, and even have the chance to perform internationally.

The band includes brass, woodwinds, percussion and color guard, and performs a wide variety of musical genres. No marching experience? No problem. The Sound accepts music and non-music majors and previous marching experience is not required.

Band Camp

Band camp is held the week before classes begin. This fun-filled week includes learning show and stands music, drill, basic marching techniques and much more. Students are allowed to move into the dorms prior to band camp for free, avoiding the chaos of move-in day. Band camp is also a prime opportunity to meet people, make new friends, explore the campus and become familiar with the numerous marching band traditions.

No audition is required to participate in The Sound. Placement auditions for the drum line and color guard occur the first day of band camp.

Practice Schedule

On game day, The Sound rehearses for an hour in the DakotaDome. During the week, the band practices on:

  • Tuesdays from 3:30-5 p.m.
  • Thursdays from 3:30-5 p.m.
  • Fridays from 4-5 p.m.

Performance Stipends

$300 stipends are available for members of The Sound. Applications are available during band camp or by contacting Peter Lillpopp.

Uniforms & Instruments

At the beginning of the fall semester, each student is assigned a band uniform and given a Sound t-shirt. All members are responsible for getting white marching shoes like the “Vanguard” or “Glide” Dinkles marching shoe. The color guard has different shoes; please check for current requirements. If needed, a student can check out an instrument at no charge.
