The Revised Edition of Oscar Howe, Artist was published in 2004 by the Oscar Howe Memorial Association, The University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
First published in 1974 as a limited edition of 100 copies, Oscar Howe Artist presented full color photographs of 17 paintings by the internationally celebrated Yanktonai Dakota artist. The photographs were accompanied by commentaries on the pieces written by Oscar Howe with an introduction by noted South Dakota author John R. Milton.
The revised edition was authorized by the Howe family and is available in both soft and hard cover editions. Special care was taken to ensure that the character, emphasis, and integrity of the initial publication were preserved. To the 1974 text were added two additional Howe paintings with commentaries by the artist as well as a biography of Howe authored by John A. Day, former Director of the University of South Dakota Art Galleries.
Presenting 19 of Oscar Howe's most impressive paintings, Oscar Howe Artist is the most comprehensive publication currently available on the artist. The book offers readers an excellent introduction to the art and life of South Dakota's Artist Laureate and one of the most powerful American Indian artists of the 20th century.
