APTA Sports Section/ Red Cross
Emergency Medical Response Program Courses

Vermillion, SD
Challenge Course: June 12, 2015
Full Course: June 15-17, 2015

During the summer of 2011, the American Red Cross introduced the new fully updated Emergency Medical Response Program. This replaced the American Red Cross Emergency Response Course. The new course is considered a 60 contact hour course, whereas the old course was considered to be a 51 contact hour course with up to 5 additional hours for enrichment materials. Another change is that the certification is now valid for 2 years, instead of 3. Completion of this course is one way in which an individual can fulfill one of the requirements to sit for the American Physical Therapy Association’s Sports Certified Specialist exam.

The purpose of the Red Cross Emergency Medical Response Course is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical personnel take over. Course content exceeds the 2008 Emergency Medical Services Educational Standards for Emergency Medical Responders and has been approved by the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. The care steps outlined within this program are consistent with the Guidelines 2010 for First Aid and the 2010 Consensus on Science for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

Two courses will be available at the Lee Medical Building, University of South Dakota, in 2015:

  • For those who need to renew their certification (must not have allowed original certification to elapse), one may challenge the course on June 12, 2015. This includes completing the new workbook prior to the course, attending the challenge course, which will include skill reviews, and passing both the written and practical examinations. The course will take place from 8 AM – 6 PM. We will allow a maximum of 34 individuals, outside of the USD PT Department, to register for this course. Please note that order of payment received will dictate who is allowed into the course. The cost for the refresher/challenge course is $175 for APTA members and $225 for non-members.

  • For those desiring to certify for the first time or desire to attend the entire course, the course will take place on June 15-17, 2015 from 8 AM – 6 PM each day. Individuals will need to complete the workbook prior to the course, attend all sessions, and pass both the written and practical examinations. We are allowed to complete the course in 3 days as the APTA and the American Red Cross have come to an agreement that professional schooling and completion of the approved workbook can count towards part of the contact hours. In order to maintain the 20:1 ratio, we can only allow 13 individuals into the course since we have 26 students and 1 faculty member already registered. Please note that order of payment received will dictate who is allowed into the course. The cost for the 3 day certification course is $400 for APTA members, $500 for non-members, and $250 for students.

For both the challenge and the full course, all participants need to have the new Emergency Medical Response Textbook (Rev 6/11 – approximately $70) or the Emergency Medical Response E-Textbook (Rev 8/11 – approximately $30), a new Emergency Medical Response Workbook (Rev 6/11 – approximately $45), and have a CPR mask. Instead of buying the book and workbook separately, you may want to consider buying the Emergency Medical Response Deluxe Student Kit, which includes the textbook, e-textbook, workbook, and EMR interactive (approximately $100). You may order from any company you desire, but the American Red Cross recommends StayWell.

Following successful completion of the course, anyone desiring CEU credits (5.1 for entire course, .6 for the CPR/AED, and .3 each for the CPR/AED and responder challenge courses) must apply for the CEUs directly through the American Red Cross at the completion of the program. Each CEU certification costs $20 extra.
