History is the exploration of people, events, institutions and values as old as the ancient world and as new as yesterday’s headlines. Historians are part sleuth and part research scientist, sharing a curiosity about where we’ve come from and history’s potential to influence where we are going.
With a strong liberal arts background and skills in researching, synthesizing and articulating information, history grads succeed in a wide range of fields including education, law, business, government, medicine and more.
History majors can choose from the B.A. or B.S. degrees, or a degree in history education offered in conjunction with the School of Education for students interested in secondary teaching. The U offers the only Master of Arts degree in history in South Dakota. Students can focus in areas such as American Frontier, South Dakota, 20th century U.S., and various areas of European history.
History is a department within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Two faculty members have received the Belbas-Larsen Award for Excellence in Teaching and three have been nominated for this award. Various members have also received the Professor of the Year Award and Teacher of the Year Award.
