KYOT Channel 21 Statement of Purpose

KYOT-TV is a student run cable television station owned by the University of South Dakota and operated by the Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism.  The mission of KYOT is to provide students with hands-on experience in order to prepare them to be competent professionals in their future communication careers. This is accomplished through participation in various positions and activities involved in the administration, creation, production, and marketing of programming and the station. KYOT is committed to educating future professionals in the total process of television production and distribution.

KYOT is grounded in the liberal arts philosophy which fully embraces educating the whole person. Hands on media experience serves this philosophy as one component of the communications process. However, media production skills are but one tool among many that develop the spirit of liberal learning and intellectual inquiry. At KYOT, hands on education extends beyond production to include hands on research, criticism, evaluation, management, and human communication skills. KYOT promotes the learning of techniques and disciplines necessary for the enjoyment and success of a media career.
