Research resources on the Public Access Computer are available to the public; however, WestlawNext, Lexis Advance and Bloomberg Law access require an account password and due to licensing restrictions are not available for public use. The public may also have limited check out privileges for the materials from the circulating collections of the Law Library. A significant percentage of the materials in the Law Library do not circulate outside the building. Circulating materials may be checked out by attorneys admitted to the State Bar of South Dakota for a three week loan period with one renewal. Loan privileges are also extended to attorneys in Northwest Iowa, Southwest Minnesota and Northeast Nebraska at the discretion of the Law Library Director.

After-Hours Access Policy

Items may be checked out in person. Items may also be requested via telephone or email. Materials will routinely be mailed to you via commercial carrier. The cost of postage is the responsibility of the borrower. Requestors must include their name, State Bar and Bar Number, current mailing address, current phone number and commercial carrier account information. It is the borrower’s responsibility to return materials to the Law Library by the due date. Failure to return materials after written request is theft under the South Dakota Codified Laws.

The library reserves the right to deny a request for renewal when materials are needed by other patrons. The library reserves the right to revoke circulation privileges to any person who abuses the privilege or refuses to follow library policies.
