The Library has on its faculty a Distance Education Librarian whose primary responsibility is assisting off-campus students. Students may also call the I.D. Weeks Library reference desk for assistance (677-6085 or 1-800-299-5448). The Distance Education Librarian provides services similar to those offered on-campus students:
Reference Assistance is available to all USD distance education students and faculty. Reference inquiries are accepted by mail, FAX (677-5488), or telephone (677-5629 or 1-800-299-5448). E-mail reference is available at libdist@usd.edu. In-person reference assistance is available 63 hours per week.
A toll-free number is available for anyone in the outlying area needing library assistance. The toll-free number is equipped with voice mail. The current number is 1-800-299-5448 and is valid for the following area codes: 605 (SD), 712 (IA), and 507 (MN). Services rendered by the toll-free telephone include: Reference assistance, library materials requests, computer search requests, computer assistance.
Bibliographic Instruction. The Distance Education Librarian provides information literacy on site at Sioux Falls and Sioux City. RDTN and satellite uplinks are also used. Students are taught information retrieval skills, use of databases and explained what services are available to them.
Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan. Request forms are available at the Sioux Falls Public Library, Morningside College, School of Mines & Technology, State Library, Rapid City Public Library, Ellsworth AFB Library, Northern State University Library and Dakota State University Library. Students and faculty can also request interlibrary loan materials through the Library's web site at http://illiad.usd.edu/illiad/logon.html.
I.D. Weeks Library materials, including photocopies of periodical articles, database search results, books, etc., will generally be sent within two working days of request. The time it takes to receive materials through Interlibrary Loan (materials from other libraries) varies depending upon location and availability of the item. Requestors will be notified if materials cannot be supplied by the cancel date indicated. Materials from the I.D Weeks Library will be sent free of charge to USD Distance Education students. For Interlibrary Loan items, every attempt is made to obtain materials free of charge from other libraries. In some instances, libraries charge for loans or photocopies and these charges will be passed on to the requestor.

Online Database Searching. The Library provides access to hundreds of databases, using online vendors such as DIALOG. The Library provides online database searching on a cost recovery basis; any online charges will be passed on to the requestor. Requests for online searching can be faxed, mailed, e-mailed, or telephoned to the Research Instruction Librarian or the Distance Education Librarian.
Reserve Readings. Reserve readings for extension sites are coordinated through the Library's Distance Education Librarian. Classroom reserve readings are available in Sioux Falls and at Morningside College.
