The Cardiovascular Research Institute

The  Cardiovascular  Research  Institute  (CRI)  was made possible by a generous gift from Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health Systems to The University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1998.  Dr. A. Martin Gerdes, a recognized expert in Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), has served as director of the CRI since its inception.

The  CRI  currently  has  a  total of 51  employees - 7 full time faculty level investigators - 1 Research Operations Manager - 1 Animal Facility Manager - 2 Laboratory Managers - 8 Postdoctoral Fellows - 3 Research Staff Scientists - 8  Research  Associates - 6  Graduate  Students - 10  Students - 2 Animal Technicians - 1 Laboratory Aide and 2 Administrative Staff.

In the past few years, investigators at the CRI have obtained more than $20 million in  competitive  research  grants to fund  their work  from a  variety of sources  -  The  National  Institutes  of  HealthThe  American  Heart Association and numerous pharmaceutical companies.

The mission statement of the Cardiovascular Research Institute is "to conduct basic and clinical research related to cardiovascular diseases that seriously impact the health of people around the world, in the hope to enhance the quality of all lives inflicted by cardiovascular disease."
