Physician Assistants (PAs) are health care providers who practice medicine with physician supervision. PAs provide healthcare in a variety of practice settings and in various specialty areas.
Our Mission
The mission of the Physician Assistant Studies Program at The University of South Dakota is to provide a high quality education to prepare and equip students to become physician assistant’s who are committed to delivering high quality patient care to meet the needs of South Dakota and the region.
To accomplish this mission the program:
- Selects individuals likely to practice in South Dakota and the region
- Selects individuals who have the interpersonal aptitudes and maturity that are necessary for successful practice as a physician assistant
- Fosters an interest in primary care to rural and underserved populations
- Promotes and supports excellence and professionalism
- Expects faculty and students to be partners in the educational process within an environment of mutual respect
- Expects students to be accountable for individual learning
- Empowers students to become lifelong learners
- Promotes and supports the ideal of a competent, caring, and compassionate physician assistant
Physician Assistants and students should at all times adhere to the following core values:
- Demonstrate professional and personal ethical behavior
- Act with honesty and integrity
- Demonstrate compassion to serve those in need
- Advocate a team approach to healthcare
- Have a commitment to life long learning
- Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural and individual differences
- Promote the physician assistant profession and its ideals
In South Dakota and across the nation, PAs help meet an essential need for primary healthcare providers in formerly unserved or underserved small communities and rural areas. For this reason, the program selects candidates for its highly competitive program who are likely to practice in South Dakota and areas of the region most in need.
