Children's health care is unique: just as children are not small adults, children's healthcare differs from that provided to adults. Pediatricians must also have unique characteristics. Dr. R. James McKay, one of the pioneers of the field of pediatrics and the inaugural Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, would begin his orientation of third-year medical students by describing the attributes of a successful pediatrician with the acronym GRUSK: gentle, respectful, understanding, sympathetic and kind. As pediatricians, we are indeed concerned with children as unique individuals who deserve our gentle understanding, sympathy, kindness and respect. We also recognize that children are an integral part of families, and that caring for a child also includes caring for his or her family in the context of that family's genetic, cultural and socioeconomic background. We invite students and residents to participate with us in the exciting mix of clinical care, child advocacy, educational and research experiences in child health that are an integral part of academic pediatrics here at Sanford. Imagine the possibilities! H. Eugene Hoyme, MD Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota Chief Medical Officer Sanford Children's Hospital
