We encourage all academic faculty to engage in professional development. To assist in this, the faculty development committee has funds available for faculty travel. Any faculty wishing to use faculty development funds should complete the following application process.
In general, an individual may receive funding every three to five years. Applicants who are not selected may reapply and should state that they are doing so in future applications.
External career and leadership development programs that are sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association, universities or other public agencies will be considered. Faculty development programs related to a faculty member’s clinical discipline will not be considered for funding through this process.
The application should be submitted to the faculty development committee at least four to six weeks prior to the deadline provided by the external program. Applicants must electronically submit an updated CV along with their application.
A subcommittee of three members of the Faculty Development Committee will review all applications and recommend approval based on the merits of the application, the needs of the Sanford School of Medicine and the availability of funding. Committee members applying for funding — or funding for spouses, partners or family members — are to recuse themselves from serving on the subcommittee. The chair of the faculty development committee will notify the applicant of the committee's decision.
The faculty member must be supported in the application by their department chair. Faculty development funds may be used to provide up to 50 percent of the expenses related to the program up to $1,500. The balance must be covered through other funding sources, such as the faculty member’s department, division, clinic, hospital, grants, etc. It is the faculty member’s responsibility to obtain the remainder of the funding.
The sponsored individual is expected to bring back “lessons learned” and share them with SSOM faculty, staff and trainees. How the lessons will be shared is up to the applicant, but it must be specified in the application. Any assistance needed will be coordinated through the Office of Faculty Development.
