VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Vermillion Literary Project is hosting a poetry reading and poetry slam on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Coffee Shop Gallery, which is located at 24 W. Main St. in downtown Vermillion. The poetry reading will feature poet Suzanne Sunshower.
Sunshower, who retired to South Dakota in 2002, founded the feminist e-journal "Quiet Mountain Essays" to mentor new writers. After conducting a writing workshop at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in 2005, she began the Quiet Mountain Essays Outreach Program, which publishes the poetry of South Dakota inmates. A regional representative for the International Women’s Writing Guild, Sunshower’s poems, articles and essays have appeared in at least 100 newspapers, journals and literary collections. Her reading will be followed by a poetry slam – open to anyone. Poets planning to slam should bring three poems. Prizes will be awarded to slam winners.
