VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Beacom School of Business at The University of South Dakota will host “The Speed of Trust,” a presentation by author and keynote speaker Stephen M.R. Covey, on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in Slagle Auditorium.
Covey, co-founder and CEO of CoveyLink Worldwide, is the author of the best-selling book, "The Speed of Trust – The One Thing That Changes Everything," which chronicles the impact of trust on leadership.
"There’s risk in trusting people because they’ve been disappointed before, and, therefore, they have difficulty trusting again," Covey remarked in an interview touting his April appearance at USD. "But there’s enormous risk in not trusting people."
Dr. Tom Davies, associate dean of the Beacom School of Business, says Covey’s message resonates with students who are seeking answers on what it takes to be successful leader in today’s business world. Ultimately, Covey explains, trust is the cornerstone of leadership and a skill that people can get good at.
"It becomes an extension of who you are," he said of trust. "Trust is a hard-edged economic driver. It affects speed and it affects cost. When trust goes up, speed goes up and cost goes down. When trust goes down, speed goes down and cost goes up."
The former CEO of Covey Leadership Center, which became the largest leadership development company in the world under his stewardship, Covey is a sought-after and compelling keynote speaker as well as an advisor on trust, leadership, ethics and high performance. He personally led the strategy that propelled his father’s book, "Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," to one of the two most influential business books of the 20th century, according to CEO Magazine. A Harvard M.B.A., Covey joined Covey Leadership Center as a client developer and later became national sales manager before becoming president and CEO.
Made possible by the Beacom Opportunity Fund and the Arthur A. Volk Symposium, "The Speed of Trust" is free and open to the public. At the conclusion of the two-hour event, Covey will sign copies of his best-selling book in Slagle Auditorium.
